Oak Lawn fire chief to add Chicago Ridge to his duties (more)
The agreement, approved by both village boards, outlines that Oak Lawn Fire Chief George Sheets will take full operational control of the Chicago Ridge Fire Department. However, staffing decisions will remain the responsibility of the Chicago Ridge mayor and trustees. The SouthtownStar obtained the official documents through Illinois' freedom of information law, shedding light on this unique partnership. The deal was formally approved by Chicago Ridge on July 15 and by Oak Lawn on July 8. According to the agreement, Sheets will hold "all of the traditional powers and authorities" and will be in charge of all personnel, equipment, apparatus, and staff vehicles for the Chicago Ridge department until 2016. While staffing remains the mayor’s and trustees’ duty, Sheets will oversee discipline and administrative matters. Chicago Ridge, which employs 13 firefighter/paramedics, will cover one-third of Sheets’ salary since he is expected to dedicate at least one-third of his time to managerial duties in Chicago Ridge. This means the village will pay $37,695 over 5.5 months this year, with similar payments planned for 2015 and 2016. The agreement also states that the mayor of Chicago Ridge can terminate Sheets’ role at any time and for any lawful reason. However, if that happens, Chicago Ridge would still be responsible for covering his salary through 2016. Either Sheets or Oak Lawn must provide at least 30 days’ notice before ending his tenure in Chicago Ridge. Importantly, Sheets will not be eligible for civil service protections, pensions, workers' compensation, health insurance, or disability benefits from Chicago Ridge. Additionally, any legal action involving Sheets’ actions in one village cannot include the other as a defendant, ensuring clear separation of liability between the two communities.
