On December 7, 1970, a tragic accident occurred involving three Naperville firefighters while they were en route to a house fire. The incident took place at 7:55 AM when the Naperville Fire Department received an alarm for a house fire west of the city. A fire truck carrying five firefighters was dispatched but collided with a semi-trailer at the intersection of Illinois Routes 59 and 65. This location had been known for several fatal accidents in previous years, and traffic lights had only been installed there two weeks before the collision.
In the crash, Lieutenant Richard Rechenmacher, Engineer Jerry Herring, and Firefighter Bernard Petrowski, who were riding in the cab of the fire truck, were thrown out and killed instantly. Firefighter Mike Hill suffered critical injuries and was hospitalized, while Firefighter James Heinke, who was on the tailboard, escaped without harm.
Mutual aid was quickly provided by the Moecherville Fire Department, and the Downers Grove Fire Department sent additional personnel and equipment to assist with the response.
