Divers help remove car from pond in Vernon Hills 5-21-20
The Countryside Fire Protection District received multiple calls on Monday afternoon regarding a car accident at the intersection of Lakeview Parkway and North Fairway Drive in Vernon Hills. Witnesses reported that one of the vehicles had crashed into a nearby retention pond, with the driver still inside the submerged car. In response, divers from the Libertyville Fire Department and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District were quickly dispatched to the scene.
A photo shows the roof and luggage rack of an SUV partially visible in the middle of the pond. The driver managed to escape the vehicle and was seen sitting on the roof when firefighters arrived. With help from bystanders, he was safely pulled from the water. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Firefighters entered the water to secure the SUV for removal by Ernie’s Wrecker Service, which was on site to tow both vehicles. Divers attached a strap to the car so it could be winched out of the pond. A series of images captured the dramatic rescue and recovery efforts, showing the scene in detail.
Larry Shapiro provided several photos and a short video from the incident. Additional images can be viewed [here](#) and [here](#). One image shows the SUV being pulled from the water, while another highlights the Libertyville Dive Squad. Another photo displays the second vehicle involved in the crash, and others show the firefighters cleaning their gear after the operation.
A new dive team unit from the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District was also on hand, marking an important addition to their emergency response capabilities. An embedded video offers a glimpse into the ongoing efforts at the scene.
