3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows, 3-4-15 (part 1)

On Wednesday evening, March 4th, 2015, around 8:00 PM, firefighters from Rolling Meadows were dispatched to a reported fire at 5201 Carriageway Drive. As they made their way to the scene, they were informed that a sofa was on fire, with flames already spreading up the wall. This prompted Battalion 15 to upgrade the alarm to a Code 4, indicating a working fire. Upon arrival, police reported seeing flames bursting from a third-floor window, and shortly after, a resident had jumped from a balcony on the same floor.
The situation escalated quickly, and the alarm was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm. When firefighters arrived, they found police performing CPR on the injured individual. According to reports from the Chicago Tribune, the apartment was evacuated, and officials confirmed one person had died as a result of the fire.
Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote of Rolling Meadows stated that the victim, whose age and gender were not immediately released, had jumped from the balcony of a third-floor unit. The individual was later pronounced dead at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. By approximately 10:00 PM, the fire was contained, but firefighters were still working to fully extinguish it. The first and second floors had been evacuated, while crews continued to check the third floor for any remaining hot spots.
The alarm was later upgraded to a second alarm, then a third, before being officially canceled just before midnight. Several emergency units were on the scene, and multiple photos and videos will be shared in upcoming posts. It's worth noting that this building is located directly across the street from another structure in the same complex that had previously experienced a three-alarm fire several years earlier.
