Fatal crash in Milwaukee, WI – 10-24-19
Excerpts from Fox6now.com: Three children were struck by a vehicle while crossing the street near 22nd Street and Center Street on Thursday, October 24th, and one of them lost their life. The driver didn’t stop and fled the scene. The hit-and-run incident occurred around 5:30 p.m., when a driver ran a red light. The crash involved a 10-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old girl, along with two vehicles. Authorities are still unclear whether all three children were hit by both cars, but both vehicles left the area immediately after the collision. Tragically, the 6-year-old girl died, while the other two—her sister and cousin—were seriously injured and are currently in the hospital. The vehicle that caused the accident was described as a gray 2007–2009 Saturn Aura, with front-end damage and tinted windows. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward and help identify the driver. Excerpts from an earlier article at jsonline.com: For the next two months, the Milwaukee Police Department will be sharing the names, booking photos, and arrest details of individuals convicted of felony reckless driving and/or fleeing from police on their social media platforms. This new initiative, called “Keep MKE’s Streets Safe,†aims to increase public awareness and deter dangerous behavior on the roads. Many of those arrested for these offenses have long criminal records, and 32 individuals arrested this year have been previously charged with fleeing from police. The move follows a recent crash that left three people injured in the 3100 block of North 35th Street, which happened during a police pursuit. Officers were chasing a stolen vehicle linked to an armed robbery and home invasion reported earlier in the 2700 block of West State Street. The driver failed to pull over during a traffic stop, leading to a high-speed chase. The pursuit was eventually called off, but the suspect continued to drive recklessly before crashing into another vehicle. Currently, police are allowed to pursue vehicles involved in violent crimes, drug-related activities, or reckless driving. However, recent incidents have raised concerns about the risks associated with such pursuits. On August 1st, Lequon McCoy, 19, was killed when a car being chased by police reached speeds up to 80 mph and ran a red light, striking his Jeep Renegade at North 12th and West Locust streets. Another tragic incident occurred on April 18th, when 18-year-old Larenzo Jones was fatally injured during a police chase that began after a shooting wounded two girls, ages 13 and 16, and a 14-year-old boy. Jones was in the suspect’s vehicle. In June 2018, Officer Charles Irvine Jr., 23, was killed and his partner, Officer Matthew Schulze, was injured during a high-speed pursuit on the city’s northwest side. These incidents have sparked renewed debate over the safety and effectiveness of police chases.
