Brush fire – Potawatami Woods, Prospect Heights 3-11-12

RED Center, serving the Prospect Heights Fire Department, received a call around 4 p.m. today reporting a significant brush fire in the Potawatami Woods Forest Preserve off Portwine Road within the Prospect Heights Fire District. Based on the caller’s description of an area roughly the size of a football field being involved, the incident was escalated to a working fire. The first units on scene reported a large header and found a major fire burning in the forest preserve. It quickly became clear that the fire covered a vast area, requiring more resources than the initial response could provide. Firefighters from Prospect Heights, Wheeling, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods joined forces with a brush unit from Long Grove to tackle the blaze. However, much of the terrain was soft, causing several vehicles to become stuck during the operation. Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, captured several images from the scene. One of the first units to reach the area was Long Grove Brush 55, which played a key role in establishing water lines and supporting hand crews. Despite their efforts, flames flared up rapidly, making it difficult for firefighters to keep up. Additional companies were brought in as the alarm was elevated to a MABAS Brush Fire Box Alarm. Water tenders, brush units, and engines from the Countryside Fire District, Buffalo Grove, Grayslake, Elk Grove Township, and Fox River Grove arrived to assist. The fire spread quickly through tall grasses, creating thick black smoke and intense heat visible for miles. Complicating the response was the fact that the Barrington Fire Department was also dealing with a large brush fire at the box alarm level, which required some of the same resources. This added pressure on dispatchers to manage both incidents effectively. Firefighters used wildland progressive hose packs and hand tools to contain the fire, while water tenders supplied critical support. As the fire burned through larger fuel loads, flare-ups occurred frequently, but crews worked tirelessly to bring it under control. No injuries were reported, and once the fire was contained, the Cook County Forest Preserve Conservation Team arrived to complete the mop-up.
