5th Alarm fire in Woodstock, 11-26-13

This is coming live from Tyler Tobolt:

Just after 6 PM tonight (November 26, 2013), the Woodstock Fire Department responded to reports of a potential barn fire at 16812 Kunde Road in Union. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a hay barn that was completely engulfed in flames. At 6:40 PM, the incident commander called for MABAS Box #5-73 to be elevated to the second alarm level. This brought additional resources including a Crystal Lake engine, a Marengo engine, a Union tanker, a McHenry tanker, a Cary tanker, a Harvard squad, a Wonder Lake squad, a Huntley RIT chief and engine, along with support from EMA and the Salvation Army. The initial complement of support included a Fox Lake engine, Marengo EMS, the Woodstock chief, and a Nunda Rural tanker.
Not long after, the incident escalated further, prompting a request for MABAS Box #5-73 to move up to third alarm status at 6:48 PM. Additional units responding included a Wauconda engine, the Nunda Rural tanker, a Hebron tanker, an Algonquin truck, a McHenry squad with cascade capabilities, and a Harvard chief.
Roughly an hour later, around 7 PM, the incident commander raised the response to a fourth alarm, specifically requesting more tankers. This brought reinforcements like a Hampshire tanker, a Spring Grove tanker, a Fox River Grove tanker, and a Richmond tanker. Crews worked tirelessly to battle the massive hay barn fire, which had already consumed the structure and posed a risk of spreading to nearby exposures. All tankers were tasked with supplying multiple fire suppression lines. By this point, the fire had been burning for about 90 minutes when the incident commander called for MABAS Box #5-73 to be upgraded to a fifth alarm at 7:30 PM. This call specifically requested additional engines, including one from Rutland-Dundee and another from Walworth, Wisconsin. The MABAS Box was finally cleared around 9 PM, though crews remained actively engaged in extinguishing the blaze.
Thank you for sharing this report, Tyler.
