Because of this, we have built strong IT security features directly into the core of our drones. **Designed for Signal-Deprived Environments** Our drones are specifically designed for indoor operations where external signals like GPS or internet are unavailable. This means the only device connected to the drone is the Ground Control System (GCS). Operating without any external connection makes the system inherently more secure, as there’s no risk of remote interference or data leaks. **Secure Data Storage** All data collected by the drone is stored on an SD card inside the drone itself. Operators can also save screen recordings on the tablet as a backup. These are the only two storage locations—no data is ever uploaded online. After the flight, the SD card can be removed and transferred to a computer. The drone and GCS only communicate with each other during operation, and no components need to connect to the internet. Even the tablet, which can access the internet, can have its connectivity permanently disabled before leaving our facility. **External Components** The only non-proprietary parts of our system are the cameras and the transmission system. Both the Elios 1 and Elios 2 use a DJI Lightbridge 2 radio link. The GCS includes a DJI controller and a Samsung tablet. The Cockpit app communicates with the DJI controller via an SDK, requiring a one-time internet connection during production. After that, no further communication with DJI is needed. **Proprietary Systems** Every component—from the drone design and firmware to the app on the tablet and software on the computer—is developed in-house. There is no third-party interaction, ensuring that all data remains under the operator’s control. **Communication Between GCS and UAV** The GCS uses an encrypted uplink to prevent unauthorized control of the drone. While the downlink isn’t encrypted, it requires pairing with the UAV through a mobile device running DJI Go. Without a paired device, accessing the downlink would require significant technical expertise and physical access to the hardware. **The Tablet: A Key Component** The tablet is the only part of the system that can connect to the internet. However, we offer the option to disable this permanently. If enabled, updates must be done manually, and the Cockpit app includes security checks to detect potential attacks. We recommend disabling internet access for maximum security. **Offline Updates and Management** Even if the tablet has never been connected to the internet, the entire system can still operate without any online connection. Firmware and app updates are handled offline using files downloaded from our secure servers. All updates are created in-house, ensuring full control over the process. **Best Practices for Data Security** Operators should keep the drone and GCS secure on-site, store SD cards separately, and delete data after downloading. We also recommend keeping the transportation box locked at all times. For inspection providers, using empty SD cards and uploading data immediately helps minimize the risk of leaving sensitive information behind. **Data Collected by Flyability** Flyability collects data only when the drone is armed and the tablet is connected to the internet. In such cases, we collect the unit ID (encrypted), flight time, and firmware version. Users are notified and can opt out. Debugging logs can be sent voluntarily but are not required.
