3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows, 3-4-15 (part 1)

Rolling Meadows firefighters were dispatched to 5201 Carriageway Drive around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2015, after a report of a fire in a third-floor apartment. As they made their way to the scene, crews were informed that a sofa was already on fire, with flames spreading up the wall. Due to the rapid escalation, Battalion 15 upgraded the alarm to a Code 4, indicating a working fire. Police who arrived first reported seeing flames bursting from a third-floor window, followed by a shocking discovery — a resident had jumped from the balcony.

As a result, the alarm was escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm. When firefighters arrived, they found police already performing CPR on the injured individual. According to the Chicago Tribune, the apartment was evacuated, and officials confirmed that one person had died as a result of the fire.

The victim, whose age and gender were not immediately disclosed, had jumped from the balcony of a third-floor unit, according to Rolling Meadows Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote. The individual was pronounced dead at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

By around 10 p.m., the fire was contained, but firefighters were still working to fully extinguish it. The first and second floors had been evacuated, and crews were conducting a final check of the third floor.

The incident continued to escalate, with the alarm being upgraded to a Second Alarm and then a Third Alarm before being officially canceled just before midnight. Several emergency units were on the scene, and multiple photos and videos will be shared in the coming days. As a side note, this building is located directly across the street from another structure in the same complex that was involved in a three-alarm fire several years prior.
