Chicago 3-11 Alarm fire, August 27, 2014 (part 1)

Chicago was called to a reported fire at a three-story building, with commercial spaces on the ground floor and vacant upper levels. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire in the basement and immediately requested the high-expansion foam unit. Before deploying it, all units were ordered to evacuate the building and adopt a defensive strategy. A 2-11 alarm was initially requested, followed by a 3-11 alarm. Two tower ladders, Squad 5A (Snorkel), the reserve Snorkel (661), and one of the turret wagons (676) were dispatched. Multiple hand lines and multi-functional attack lines were also in operation throughout the incident. Several of our contributors were on the scene, and we expect multiple posts with photos and videos from the event in the coming hours. From CFD Media:
  • 6308 S Halsted – 3-11 alarm for a 3-story structure measuring 100x200 feet. CFD companies are actively working the fire.
  • CFD is operating in a defensive mode and making progress. No evacuations or transports are currently taking place.
  • Firefighters continue to battle the blaze on Halsted under a 3-11 alarm. No transports are being made, and CFD will remain on scene for an extended period. Updates will follow as conditions change.
  • The incident commander will hold a media briefing in five minutes at the corner of 63rd and Halsted, near the fire scene.
  • 0305: The 3-11 alarm has been secured. No transports have occurred. CFD is still on scene, chasing hot spots. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Several images from the scene have already been shared. One shows a dramatic night fire at 6308 S Halsted, captured by Steve Redick. Another image features a smoky scene with a fire engine approaching, taken by Larry Shapiro. A third photo highlights the work of the Chicago Fire Department’s Snorkel unit, also by Larry Shapiro. This incident is a reminder of the challenges faced by first responders during large-scale fires. The coordinated effort between multiple units and the decision to go defensive early likely helped prevent further spread and protect surrounding structures. More updates are expected as the investigation continues.
