O’Hare Airport Disaster Drill – update

Gordon J. Nord, Jr. captured a series of powerful images showcasing the Chicago Fire Department in action during a major disaster drill held at O’Hare International Airport on Saturday. The exercise, designed to test emergency response protocols, took place behind the International Terminal and featured a realistic training setup, including a burning aircraft prop and multiple portable burn units. In one photo, firefighters from ARFF 6-5-3 are seen working to extinguish a fire that mimicked an aircraft emergency. Behind them, a United Airlines plane was also used as part of the drill scenario, adding to the authenticity of the training. Another image highlights the coordination between fire and EMS personnel as they set up a triage area using temporary tents and colored tarps, each representing different levels of injury severity. The drills also included simulated patient handling, with firefighters carrying injured individuals to the triage section. One shot shows a group of responders moving through a mock disaster zone, surrounded by mannequins and other props used to simulate casualties. In another, critically injured victims—marked with red tags—are being transported to the triage tent for immediate care. Chicago Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff visited one of the triage areas during the drill, observing the efforts of EMS workers as they treated victims. These photos offer a rare glimpse into the preparation and dedication of first responders who work tirelessly to ensure public safety in real-life emergencies.
