Early Saturday morning (September 9, 2017), shortly before 6:30 AM, Buffalo Grove police and fire teams were dispatched to 96 University Drive following a report from a passerby who noticed smoke billowing from the residence. The police arrived first and immediately began ringing the doorbell and knocking on the doors in an effort to alert any sleeping homeowners.
Within minutes, Arlington Heights Engine 4 and Buffalo Grove Tower 25 arrived on the scene. They quickly stretched a hose to the front door before forcing entry. Thick smoke was already seeping out from the second floor, and the ground floor was completely obscured by dense smoke. As the firefighters broke through the front door, the thick plume of smoke surged outward.
The alarm level was escalated to Code 4 for an active fire, and two additional ambulances were called in when it was discovered that there might be three people still inside the house. Neighbors soon approached the responding officers to inform them that the vehicles parked in the driveway didn’t belong to the homeowners, and the car registered to them was missing.
After conducting thorough primary and secondary searches, it was determined that the only living beings present during the fire were two cats. Firefighters valiantly tried to revive the cats, but unfortunately, they did not survive. One heartening moment came when a firefighter managed to rescue one of the cats, giving it a chance at life despite the tragic circumstances.
The entire operation involved several units working in tandem, with fire engines laying hoses across the street and firefighters navigating through the smoke-filled home. It was a tense and challenging situation, but the efforts of the first responders were commendable.
