New ambulance in Clarendon Hills

From recent reports in the Chicago Tribune: It seems like Clarendon Hills got lucky when they opted to hold onto their older ambulance as a backup when they bought a brand-new $259,000 vehicle back in December 2014. Little did they know how crucial that decision would turn out to be. The shiny new 2015 Freightliner/Horton ambulance, which rolled into town on December 11th, has been sitting idle since February 23rd due to some serious structural issues. Fire Chief Brian Leahy confirmed that the vehicle is currently out of commission because of extensive cracking along the interior walls. Repairs are underway, but it's anticipated to be at least late March before it's back on the road. Chief Leahy described the situation as frustrating: "We first noticed one crack, and then within a week, five more appeared. It's definitely not what we expected." The ambulance was promptly sent back to Foster Coach Sales, Inc., a specialized dealership based in Sterling, Illinois, who in turn forwarded it to Horton Ambulance in Ohio for further inspection and repair. As of now, the plan is to completely dismantle the vehicle on March 9th, inspect every component, and then reassemble it. Leahy remains optimistic, though: "This feels more like a minor hiccup than anything else. It’s mostly cosmetic, but it still needs fixing." In the meantime, Clarendon Hills has had to bring their older 2008 ambulance back into active duty. Initially, there were plans to either trade in or sell the older model. Those discussions led to two verbal offers of $30,000 each, but ultimately, internal deliberations prompted the decision to keep the older ambulance as a reserve unit. This way, it can step in whenever the newer ambulance requires routine maintenance, breaks down, or is involved in an accident. Traditionally, the fire department has relied solely on a single ambulance, with the ladder truck only carrying minimal medical supplies and unable to transport patients to the hospital. Leahy admitted that the department might have to operate without a backup for a short period while the new ambulance undergoes repairs. Still, Foster Coach Sales has graciously offered to provide a temporary replacement if necessary. Despite the setback, the community can rest assured that the fire department is taking all necessary steps to ensure emergency services remain uninterrupted.
