Hello Portland!

Autodesk's New Headquarters: Breathing Life into the Central Eastside Industrial District In today’s fast-paced tech world, staying ahead means being where the action is. For Autodesk Portland, this meant relocating to a spot that not only fosters creativity but also helps us connect deeply with our customers and peers. Often, that means making bold moves—and that’s exactly what we did. Traditionally, major tech companies in the Silicon Forest have set up shop on the outskirts of the city, either in sprawling suburban campuses or office parks. But our customers—the engineers, designers, and manufacturers—are increasingly gravitating toward vibrant urban centers. So, we made the decision to join them, choosing to plant roots in the heart of the ‘makers’ district: the Central Eastside. The move wasn’t just about convenience; it was about immersing ourselves in a community that shares our passion for innovation. Our new location offers easy access to the very people and industries we aim to support. It’s a strategic shift that aligns perfectly with our mission to drive progress through design and technology. To give you a visual, take a look at this aerial view of our new headquarters (insert image link here). From the moment we arrived, we knew this was the right place. But the journey didn’t stop there. We found a building that spoke volumes about Portland’s industrial heritage: the Towne Storage Building. This stunning red-brick structure isn’t just a piece of history—it’s a symbol of resilience and craftsmanship. Its prominent visibility made it the ideal canvas for our vision. Once we settled on the location, we leaned on our own tools—ReCap, 3ds Max, InfraWorks, BIM 360, Revit, and Revit Live—to create a digital blueprint of the space. This virtual prototype guided everything from design to construction, helping us anticipate potential issues before they arose. It was a testament to how technology can enhance even the most traditional processes. Inside, we wanted to craft an environment that felt welcoming and inspiring. Engaging our employees in the design process was key. How do you gather input from 200 individuals without overwhelming them? Human-centered design principles came to the rescue. We sought feedback on everything from color schemes to spatial layout, ensuring everyone’s voice was heard. Our employees had strong feelings about creating a space that reflected both Autodesk’s ethos and Portland’s unique vibe. That’s why we collaborated with local artisans and sourced materials like reclaimed Douglas fir from Centennial Mills across the Willamette River. Even a retired couple used salvaged wood to build picnic tables that have quickly become a beloved feature of our new office. The interior design also draws inspiration from our customers’ work. For instance, the main staircase mimics a rough-hewn metal part, paying homage to the manufacturing roots of our industry. But perhaps the most exciting addition is the PIE Shop, a startup incubation program housed on one floor. Here, fledgling companies gain access to our team for mentorship, utilize our resources to prototype their ideas, and experiment with the tools they’ll need to bring their visions to life. It’s a win-win: they grow, and we stay connected to the cutting edge. We’ve also committed to hosting the Innovation Quadrant in Portland, a dynamic collective of innovators, educators, and creators focused on shaping a better future. Their goals align seamlessly with ours at Autodesk—to envision, design, and build a brighter world. Standing here now, I’m deeply inspired by how our mission resonates with the proud industrial legacy of this neighborhood. It feels like the perfect stage for what’s coming next. Every day, I’m energized by the possibilities. This move has redefined our presence in Portland, and I can’t wait to see where this new chapter takes us.
