Hello Portland!

**Autodesk's New Headquarters Brings Innovation to the Heart of Portland** When it comes to staying ahead in tech innovation, being in the right place is crucial. It’s not just about having access to resources but also about fostering empathy with your customers and drawing inspiration from those tackling similar challenges. For Autodesk Portland, that meant relocating to a place that truly resonates with our mission—and that place is the Central Eastside Industrial District. Traditionally, major tech companies in the Silicon Forest have chosen suburban campuses or sprawling office parks on the outskirts of the city. However, our customers—the product designers, manufacturers, and emerging cloud software communities—are increasingly concentrated in vibrant urban cores. Recognizing this shift, we decided to move closer to these dynamic hubs. The Central Eastside, with its rich legacy of craftsmanship and innovation, was the ideal choice. Our new headquarters occupies the iconic Towne Storage Building, a stunning red brick structure that symbolizes Portland’s industrial past. As one of the most visible landmarks in the area, it serves as the perfect backdrop for Autodesk’s next chapter in this city. To guide the renovation and interior design, we leveraged our own tools—ReCap, 3ds Max, InfraWorks, BIM 360, Revit, and Revit Live—to create a virtual prototype of the building. This approach allowed us to anticipate potential construction issues and ensure the final design aligned with our vision. By immersing ourselves in the project virtually, we gained invaluable insights, particularly from the perspectives of architects and builders. Inside, we wanted to create a space that wasn’t just functional but inspiring—a place where employees would genuinely want to spend their days. To achieve this, we involved our workforce in the design process. With over 200 employees contributing feedback, we explored everything from color schemes and spatial layouts to the emotional resonance of different design elements. Employees expressed a strong desire to blend Autodesk’s corporate culture with the unique spirit of Portland. To honor this, we collaborated with local artisans and incorporated locally sourced materials, such as Douglas fir salvaged from Centennial Mills across the Willamette River. Even a retired couple, inspired by the concept, crafted custom picnic tables using reclaimed wood—a feature now cherished by everyone in our new office. The interior design reflects the essence of what our customers do. For instance, the main staircase draws inspiration from a rough-hewn metal component, echoing the rugged elegance of industrial fabrication. These details remind us daily of the incredible work happening around us. Beyond fostering a creative workspace, we’ve taken steps to deepen our ties with the community. One entire floor is dedicated to the PIE Shop, a residency program co-founded with Uncorked Studios and Portland Incubator Experiment. This initiative provides startups with mentorship, access to our resources, and a collaborative environment to explore their ideas. Their presence enriches our space and strengthens the bond between us and the broader innovation ecosystem. Additionally, we’re proud to serve as the home base for the Innovation Quadrant in Portland. This diverse collective of innovators, educators, and creators shares our commitment to designing solutions that improve the world. It aligns beautifully with Autodesk’s mission to imagine, design, and create a better future. Standing here today, I’m deeply moved by how closely our mission aligns with the proud industrial heritage of this neighborhood. It feels like a natural fit, a bridge between the past and the future of manufacturing and creativity. As we settle into this new chapter, I can’t wait to see where this journey takes us. The possibilities feel endless, and I’m thrilled to witness the impact we’ll make together.
