Algonquin Box Alarm 9-29-12

**From the Northwest Herald** *Posted by an eyewitness* --- I was working at Algonquin Sub Shop when all of a sudden, this guy burst through the door in a panic. He was practically shouting, asking me to call 911. It was clear something serious was going on. The house at 5 Filip Street was completely engulfed in flames, with thick, black smoke billowing out. I remember thinking it was the first time I’d ever been in a situation like that—no idea what to expect. Ryals, who’s only 18, said he had never called the police before. “It’s the first time I ever had to call the police; I didn’t know what was happening,” he told me later. When the firefighters from the Algonquin Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District arrived around 6:36 PM, the two-story house was already fully ablaze. Flames were shooting right through the roof, as neighbors described it. The firefighters initially tried to go inside but had to pull back when they feared the roof might collapse. They then switched to fighting the fire from the outside, finally wrapping up their efforts around 9:30 PM. Thankfully, no one was home when the fire started, so there were no injuries. However, two cats were found safe and handed over to the owners once they returned. Emergency crews from Crystal Lake, Cary, Huntley, Carpentersville, and even McHenry County Animal Control were on hand to assist. I snapped some photos during the chaos because I thought it might help others understand just how intense the situation was. The images really capture the scale of the fire and the hard work of the firefighters. -- Chelsea McDougall *Thanks for sharing, Scott.* --- **Addendum by Tyler Tobolt** Algonquin FD got the call for a potential structure fire behind the sub shop. By the time Engine 141 arrived, there was already visible fire and smoke coming from the roof. Within ten minutes, Battalion Chief 130 requested a box alarm due to the severity of the situation. Here are some shots I took during the incident: [Insert Photos] The firefighters worked tirelessly, especially considering the danger posed by the collapsing roof. It’s always a relief to see everyone come together in moments like these. -- Tyler Tobolt
