On August 15, Yangzhou University developed the third generation of "remote-controlled underwater robots" to declare "born." It can not only walk freely under the water, but also freely detect through the "hands and feet", and then transmit the "seen" underwater conditions to the laptop on the ground in time, remotely controlled by the operator, instead of the diver Deep water operation. What's more valuable is that it has a simple operating procedure and is only 1/3 of the price of imported similar products. It has a wide range of practical applications.


Appearance: small things in the big head

Yang Xiaoling, a laboratory of the Water Conservancy College of Yangzhou University, pointed to a small thing on the table with a bright yellow head and black hands and feet. This is the second generation of underwater robots they developed. It weighs 15 kg, is 0.51 m long, 0.38 m wide and 0.32 m high. The maximum dive depth is 100 m, the maximum moving speed is 0.2 m/s, the maximum visible distance (clear water) is 6 m, and the definition is 420 lines (color). ), the robot can grab 3 kilograms of heavy objects.

The reporter saw that the robot is oval in shape and has a camera and searchlight through the plexiglass cover. There is a black cylinder next to the fuselage, there are many round holes in the cylinder, and the black "support legs" under the fuselage. According to reports, the black cylinder is the propeller of the underwater robot, the round hole is used to discharge water, and the "support leg" is its "foot". According to Yang Xiaoling, the underwater robots they developed did not have a strict distinction of “generation”. People used to make the newly developed robots the third generation. Unfortunately, because the "third-generation underwater robot" is temporarily out of stock, the reporter did not see it. But Yang Xiaoling said that the appearance of the third and second generations is exactly the same, the difference is that the third generation can work in the water.

â–  The first generation of underwater robots: good results

In 2004, domestic underwater robots were mostly foreign products, and the price of goldfish produced by Shenyang Automation Research Institute was as high as several hundred thousand, which is difficult for general units to bear. Yang Xiaoling, who was still a student at the time, thought, could he develop an underwater robot that is both practical and cheap?

In May of that year, Yang Xiaoling and Cang Yidong, Zhu Weizhen, and Guo Jun formed an underwater robot research and development team. Without experience, it started with imitating foreign advanced underwater robots; without funding, the college and teachers donated funds; the college also vacated a laboratory. Due to the class during the day, the development work can only be carried out at night, and it is often in the middle of the night. Finally, in November 2004, the first generation of underwater robots developed by Yangzhou University was born. The entire fuselage is a cube, with a set of thrusters on each side. What the classmates regret is that the robot looks a bit clumsy.

What is the actual application effect of the underwater robot developed by myself? In December 2004, the development team heard that Yangzhou Municipal Corporation was carrying out the renovation project of the ancient canal, and immediately took the sample of the donkey to recommend it. After being photographed underwater by the robot, the image of the damaged bridge in the canal was clearly transmitted back to the computer, and the staff of the municipal company was very satisfied.

â–  Second generation underwater robot: compact and durable

In the first battle, Yang Xiaoling immediately invested in the research and development of the second generation of underwater robots. In order to reduce the resistance of the water, it is necessary to change the model of the first-generation cube into a streamlined type, and the thruster must also be reduced. Finally, it is determined that each side of the fuselage is installed.

The thruster has been reduced, and the cost has followed, but a new problem has arisen – the body is prone to tilt when the thruster is started. Yang Xiaoling said that this problem has plagued everyone for a long time. Later, he suddenly remembered the working principle of the helicopter's propeller - one forward and the other reverse, not only let the helicopter fly, but also maintain balance. After the propeller tried to introduce this principle, the problem was solved.

The sealing of underwater robots is also a problem. For waterproofing, the fuselage must be completely enclosed. However, if the original thruster is used, it is difficult to seal because there is a bearing between the motor and the impeller. After some research, the research team used closed magnetic drive technology to cancel the bearing and replaced it with two magnets. The other two were attached to the inner wall of the propeller. The rotation of the motor led to the rotation of the magnet and the magnet outside the motor. A magnetic force is generated to drive the rotation of the impeller.

Underwater robots certainly can't leak water, but even if the robot has been found to leak water under water, once the water is out, it is difficult to find the leaking gap by the eye and the hand. Later, the development team thought of the valve core of the bicycle. Install it under the "belly" of the robot, so as long as you pump the robot, it is easy to find out where the water is leaking. This also improves the resistance of the robot in the water!

After the successful development of the second generation of underwater robots, the second prize of the 9th “Challenge Cup” National College Students Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Competition was won. The technology of magnetic drive, propeller jet scouring, zero-radius turning, and trim attitude adjustment was praised by Prof. Zhang Aiqun, researcher of Shenyang Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and academician Zhou Junliang, professor-level senior engineer of Jiangsu Water Resources Department. Simple and practical, and low cost, the application prospect is very large.

â– The third generation of underwater robots: economical and practical

The third generation of underwater robots was developed mainly for promotion.

In view of the actual water situation in China, there are two types of water-type and drowning models on the market. The drowning type underwater robot has a sonar system more than the clear water type. The sound waves emitted by the sonar form a graphic reflection of the situation in the water into the computer, and the operator can work through the image. But buying a sonar system greatly increases the cost of the robot.

Yang Xiaoling decided to make a sonar system. After more than a year, he finally got his wish. At present, its third-generation underwater robot is priced at only 50,000 yuan. The same type of underwater robots in foreign countries sold for 350,000 yuan when they were sold to China. Now they sell for 150,000 yuan. Yang Xiaoling hopes that the robot he has developed will recapture the market occupied by foreign companies in China with excellent cost performance and promote the development of China's underwater robot industry.
At present, there are already 3 foreign buyers who are trying out their products. In order to be able to mass produce, Yang Xiao ordered them to design molds for underwater robots. At present, the fourth generation of underwater robots has also been included in the research and development plan.
