Lignol Innovations, a U.S. subsidiary of the Canadian company Lignol Energy—specializing in cellulosic ethanol and biochemical joint products—recently announced that it is speeding up the commercial production of cellulosic ethanol from sawdust. The project, backed by a $30 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, is currently moving forward smoothly. The company is now building a commercial-scale verification unit for cellulosic ethanol in Colorado. Under the funding plan for cellulosic ethanol and biofuel initiatives, the U.S. Department of Energy has committed $200 million over the next five years to support the development of small-scale cellulose biorefineries across the country. To further advance the industrialization of its cellulosic ethanol project, Lignol Innovations has partnered with Suncor Energy Products. Suncor brings strong expertise in biomass utilization, particularly in using forest-derived materials like cork from British Columbia to produce lignin-based bioproducts and ethanol. In addition, Lignol Innovations recently launched the Cellulose Ethanol Development Center, which includes three key components: a pilot-scale facility, an enzyme development laboratory, and an engineering team. This center aims to streamline the production process and improve efficiency. Over the past few years, Lignol has gained significant experience in extracting lignin from various feedstocks. It has also successfully developed a process to produce ethanol from wood chips, achieving a theoretical ethanol yield of over 90%. These advancements position the company as a leader in sustainable biofuel technology and highlight its commitment to innovation in renewable energy solutions.
