Lignol Innovations, a U.S. subsidiary of the Canadian-based company Lignol Energy—specializing in cellulosic ethanol and biochemical joint products—recently announced that it is speeding up the commercial production of cellulosic ethanol from sawdust. The project, backed by a $30 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, is moving forward steadily. Currently, the company is building a commercial-scale verification unit for cellulosic ethanol in Colorado. As part of the broader funding strategy for cellulosic ethanol and biofuel initiatives, the U.S. Department of Energy plans to invest $200 million over the next five years to support the development of small-scale cellulose biorefineries across the country. To further advance the industrialization of its cellulosic ethanol project, Lignol Innovations has partnered with Suncor Energy Products. Suncor brings strong expertise in biomass utilization, particularly in British Columbia, where it focuses on converting forest-derived materials like cork into lignin-based bioproducts and ethanol. To strengthen its R&D capabilities, Lignol Innovations recently launched the Cellulose Ethanol Development Center. This facility includes three key components: a medium-scale demonstration unit, an enzyme development laboratory, and an engineering team dedicated to process optimization. Over the past few years, Lignol has built significant expertise in extracting lignin from various feedstocks. Additionally, the company has successfully developed a process that converts wood chips into ethanol with a theoretical yield exceeding 90%, marking a major breakthrough in the field of sustainable biofuels. With these advancements, Lignol is well-positioned to play a leading role in the future of renewable energy.
