Axial flow pump developed by Jiangsu University will be used for the South-to-North Water Transfer Project
Jiangsu Zhongtian Hydraulic Equipment Co., Ltd. (formerly Gaoyou Pump Factory), a key manufacturer of pumps for the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, has recently signed a formal technology transfer agreement with Jiangsu University. This collaboration marks a significant milestone, as it will see the university's series of axial pump models officially deployed at the source pumping station of the East Route of the project—the fourth pumping station of the Jiangdu Water Control Project. Prior to this, the university had already supplied three different pump models for the Wannianzha, Liushan, and Taierzhuang pumping stations along the East Route.
The Jiangdu Water Control Project, serving as the main source for the East Route, consists of four pumping stations in total. Among them, the fourth pumping station is the largest and most powerful, equipped with seven massive water pumps, each with a total installed capacity of 3,000 kilowatts. Together, these pumps account for 45% of the total water transfer volume from the Jiangdu Station. Given its role as the source station, the area experiences significant fluctuations in water levels and flow rates, which makes the performance requirements for the pumps extremely high.
To ensure reliability and efficiency, the Jiangsu Water Corporation, responsible for managing the East Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, conducted a comparative test by installing three different pump models at Hohai University. The results showed that the axial pump model developed by Jiangsu University achieved an impressive 2% higher efficiency compared to similar models.
According to Professor Shi Weidong, director of the Fluid Mechanical Engineering Technology Research Center at Jiangsu University, the axial pump models used in the East Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project were developed by renowned expert Professor Guan Xingfan. Over the past decade, Professor Guan has dedicated his research to improving pump designs specifically for the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, achieving remarkable success. His team has developed 12 series of axial pumps with varying specific rotational speeds, all of which have been rigorously tested by the Tianjin Water Pump Model Testing Center and the Ministry of Water Resources. These models have met and even exceeded international standards in terms of technical performance.
Currently, four of these advanced axial pump models are already in operation at the East Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, contributing significantly to the efficient and reliable movement of water from the south to the north. This ongoing collaboration between academia and industry not only enhances the project’s operational capabilities but also sets a benchmark for future water management infrastructure in China.
