"Asia's Best" does not give up any energy-saving star
In November, Henan Shenma Nylon Chemical Co., Ltd. achieved a significant milestone by becoming an energy-efficient enterprise. This progress came with the initiation of a nitrous oxide treatment project that invested over 68 million yuan and entered the testing phase. As a result, all gases from the adipic acid plant are now safely managed, with this project reducing nitrous oxide emissions by approximately 16,800 tons annually—equivalent to 4.8 million tons of carbon dioxide. In recent years, as Asia's largest manufacturer of nylon 66 salt, Shenma has focused on maximizing resource efficiency, transforming waste and exhaust into valuable resources. Their efforts have led to numerous "star flashes" in energy-saving and emission-reduction achievements.
The company uses over 64,000 tons of coke yearly to produce hydrogen for various devices such as refined benzene and cyclohexanol. However, the large volume of analytical gas generated during this process was previously released into the air, causing environmental pollution and energy waste. Although a recycling system was introduced, some emissions still escaped, creating what the company calls “star points.†Instead of ignoring these issues, Shenma took action. In March of this year, they invested 3.64 million yuan to install two 500KW generator sets, utilizing the heat from the analytical gas to generate electricity. According to Wang Enjie, deputy director of the equipment and energy division, this initiative reduces carbon monoxide and methane emissions by 39 million cubic meters annually, generates 10.75 million kWh of electricity, and recycles 12,300 tons of low-pressure steam, bringing an annual economic benefit of 5.82 million yuan.
Looking at water conservation, the company once relied on tap water but started using reclaimed water from municipal sewage treatment plants in July last year for heat exchangers and electric dust removal. This move has saved about 100,000 tons of water monthly, totaling over 1.5 million tons so far. It has reduced wastewater discharge by more than 1.5 million tons and saved over 1.3 million yuan in water costs. Building on this success, the company launched the second phase of the China Water Utilization Project this year, aiming to use 3.5 million tons of reclaimed water annually and save over 340 million yuan in water fees. Additionally, in August, the power plant optimized its circulation system, saving 1,250 kWh per hour and 2,000 cubic meters of recycled water, potentially saving over 5.6 million yuan in electricity costs annually.
Shenma’s commitment to energy-saving technologies is evident across the board. In the power plant, old screw-type chillers were replaced with lithium bromide refrigerators. According to a technician, this upgrade significantly reduces energy consumption and Freon usage. The company invested over 3 million yuan to install two new lithium bromide units, which save 24 million kWh of electricity annually. This not only cuts chilled water costs but also supports production growth, generating 6.94 million yuan in annual benefits while cutting Freon emissions by 2,400 kg. Furthermore, the company improved its condensate recovery system, boosting annual efficiency by 550,000 yuan. They also replaced mechanical atomization oil guns with bubble atomizers, saving 60 tons of diesel and generating 300,000 yuan in direct economic benefits.
“We’ve identified eight major energy-saving projects this year, with even more smaller initiatives,†said Wang Liang, vice president of Shenma Group and chairman of Nylon Chemical Co., Ltd. “We’ve assigned tasks to different departments, set clear performance standards, and implemented strict evaluations through economic responsibility systems. By combining rewards and penalties, we’ve motivated everyone to fully commit to energy-saving measures.â€
To date, the company’s energy-saving and emission-reduction projects have generated an annual economic benefit of 17 million yuan. These efforts are not just short-term gains—they represent a long-term vision for sustainable development, ensuring the continued growth of Asia’s largest nylon 66 salt production base.
