Autodesk Opens New Workshop for Advanced Manufacturing & Making in Port of San Francisco

Over the past few years, Autodesk has significantly expanded its presence in San Francisco, introducing the Autodesk Gallery and the stunning offices at One Market Street—both of which highlight the power of Autodesk software and cutting-edge sustainable design. This week marked a major milestone in the company’s Bay Area growth with the grand opening of the Autodesk Workshop at Pier 9, a brand-new 27,000-square-foot facility. Designed to support Autodesk’s mission of empowering people to imagine, design, and create a better future, this space serves as a hub for research and development in software, tools, apps, communities, and advanced workflows across industries like manufacturing, life sciences, digital art, and the maker movement. Located along the scenic San Francisco Bay and just a short walk from Autodesk’s existing offices, the event was attended by notable figures including Autodesk President and CEO Carl Bass, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, Supervisor David Chiu, Port of San Francisco Executive Director Monique Moyer, and key partners and representatives from the city and port. The opening ceremony was a celebration of innovation and collaboration, showcasing the future of design and technology. The Autodesk Workshop at Pier 9 offers hands-on experiences for Autodesk employees, partners, and guests to experiment with a wide range of materials, from wood and metal to composites. It features state-of-the-art tools for digital fabrication, including CNC machining, 3D printing, and traditional construction techniques. A full list of equipment is available on the official site, and the space is accessible only to those who have completed training and safety protocols. It also plays a central role in the Autodesk Artist in Residence program, fostering creativity and experimentation. In addition to its tech-focused spaces, the new location houses the Autodesk Consumer Group, a team committed to making creative tools and vibrant communities accessible to kids, hobbyists, artists, and makers worldwide. The Instructables team, known for its DIY content, has moved into the space, now working alongside the rest of the consumer group under one roof. The Autodesk Bio/Nano/Programmable Matter group, part of Autodesk Research, is also based at Pier 9. They will use an on-site meta-lab to explore the intersection of biology and design, developing new tools that push the boundaries of what's possible in science and engineering. The opening of the Autodesk Workshop at Pier 9 has already drawn attention from media outlets such as the San Francisco Business Times and GigaOm, highlighting its significance as a center for innovation and creativity in the region.
