After midnight on Sunday, the Lake Zurich Fire Department responded to a fire that had started on the back deck of a home located at 11 Rosewood Drive in Hawthorn Woods. Upon arrival, first responders found flames already spreading from the deck into the structure, with all residents safely evacuated. The area lacks hydrants, prompting the fire to be upgraded from a box alarm to a second alarm, which brought seven water tankers to the scene.
Wauconda’s tower ladder was initially deployed for an elevated master stream as the fire spread into the attic. However, due to insufficient water supply, firefighters shifted to a defensive strategy using hand lines. To support operations, two portable tanks were placed on-site, and a tanker shuttle was established via a Lake Zurich engine to ensure continuous water flow.
The fire severely damaged the rear section of the attic and roof, with structural damage extending to several second-floor rooms. Multiple images and a video were submitted by contributors, including early photos showing the intense fire involvement on the roof and attic.
An early image captured the roof and attic well involved, while another showed the scene from the street during the initial stages of the fire. A video provided additional context of the unfolding incident. Several more images followed, depicting key moments such as the fire being knocked down from the front, a hand line working in the rear, and the RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) observing conditions from the back.
Other images highlighted small fires along the roofline, the water supply sector in front of the building, and a Lake Zurich engine drafting from portable tanks. Additional photos showed Deerfield firefighters tackling hot spots in the B-Sector, Fox Lake tenders filling the portable tanks, and water tankers from Grayslake and Fox Lake arriving on scene.
