Kumho Tire plans to restart US plant construction in 2015

According to reports, South Korea's Kumho Tire announced recently that it plans to restart the construction of a Georgian tire factory that was suspended in the United States. The company had put the project on hold for several years due to economic difficulties.

In May 2008, Kumho Tire broke ground on the construction of the Macon plant in Georgia, US, but eight months later the company announced that it would postpone the project for one year, and by October 2009, Kumho Tire announced another Deferred this project for three years.

Harry Choi, president of Kumho Tire North America, said that the company has confirmed that it will restart the Macon plant construction project, but construction activities are expected to wait until August 2015 to be restored, and the new plant is expected to start production by the end of 2016.

When the Macon plant was first grounded in 2008, Kumho Tire said that the plant could produce 2.1 million tires each year at the beginning of operation, and the capacity will be expanded to 3.15 million/year in the future. According to the latest news released by HarryChoi recently, the new plant can produce 3 million tires each year in the initial stage of operation. In the future, its production capacity is expected to further expand to 10 million pieces/year.

It is reported that Kumho Tires Georgia subsidiary has reached an agreement with the relevant local authorities to renew the contract signed by both parties in 2008. In order to restart and complete the construction of the new plant, Kumho Tire plans to invest 200 million U.S. dollars, and the company’s initial budget for this project in 2008 was 225 million U.S. dollars.
