Renovation of large bearings

Large bearings have a long delivery time, sometimes as long as two years or longer, and this can lead to major problems in certain industrial areas, especially if high-precision components have a breaking risk. At present, an effective way to solve this problem is to implement the refitting of large bearings.

The availability of machinery and equipment has become one of the most important competitive factors in today's industry, while another equally important issue is the sustainability of equipment. SKF has included these two difficult solutions in its scope of service. He believes that the renovation of large bearings can not only achieve economic goals, but also a kind of protection resources and cost-saving options that can quickly regain available components. .

SKF has established a service organization based on its position in the global industrial market, also known as the Industrial Service Center (ISC). These service centers are mainly located in Cajamar, Brazil, Moscow, Russia, Steyr's production base in Austria, and Hanover in North America. This is an international network of experts. Its main task is to refurbish or remold continuous casting bearings, backup rollers, large bearings, bearing boxes, and special bearings in response to the user's specific equipment.

Users benefit from two aspects

As mentioned earlier, the delivery time for newly purchased large bearings is extremely long, so if the user does not want to endure the long-term shutdown of the equipment, the repair of large bearings is absolutely necessary in many cases. Although the bearing repair time and cost are dependent on the degree of damage of the bearing, the delivery time of the bearing is obviously much shorter than the delivery time of the newly purchased bearing. In addition, the cost of repairing the bearings is in most cases much lower than the cost of buying new bearings. Therefore, customers can benefit from two aspects, not only reducing downtime, but also can save more costs. And for many uses, the quality of the refurbished bearings can be as good as the quality of the newly purchased bearings.

Control costs and risks

The service that SKF's service center can provide is not limited to the repair of bearings and bearing units, but also includes the surrounding environment around the bearings, such as the refurbishment of the bearing housing and the shaft itself. After receiving the damaged bearings, the SKF service center experts first disassembled the bearings and carried out basic cleaning of their components. Then identify the degree of damage to the bearing and conduct a detailed analysis (Figure 1). This is the basis for making a repair quote, but the final quote also needs to be coordinated according to the customer's special needs.

There are four different levels of bearing refurbishment, and SKF's specialists work on these four levels, which proved to be fruitful. The first level of service is to do an in-depth investigation of the damage to the bearings, analyze the possible causes of the damage, and make a detailed description of possible modifications.

Level 2 service is to send the certified bearings back to the customer company. If the damaged bearing does not require repair, only the shipping and operating costs are charged to the customer.

The third grade service is to repair the bearing, such as thorough polishing and anti-corrosion treatment of the inner and outer rings of the bearing and the rolling elements. If necessary, carry out sandblasting on the bearing ball retainer (Figure 2). Then in-depth quality inspection according to the SKF company's guidelines (Figure 3), and finally assembled and shipped the bearings.

Level 4 services are the most extensive. In addition to all the work covered by the first three levels of service, it also includes the replacement of individual or multiple bearing components. If it is permissible, it is not necessary to renew the bearing ring, but the bearing raceway is ground and the bearing ball retainer is refurbished.

According to ISO/WD 15243, the bearing status report should describe in detail all damages of each component and explain the possible causes. In addition, the report also lists the results of precision measurements on bearings, documenting maintenance levels, and making recommendations for necessary maintenance measures and possible special circumstances. Finally, the report is accompanied by photo records so that customers can have a clear impression of the expected work.

Renovation bearing diameter should exceed 200mm

The cost of bearing repair depends to a large extent on the specific conditions of the equipment. However, it has been proved that it is necessary to consider the repair after the bearing with an outer diameter of 200 mm or more is damaged. Of course, the larger the diameter of the damaged bearing, the higher the price and the more advantageous the repair. Especially large bearings used in wind power equipment, steel industry, paper industry and cement industry (or mines) are worth repairing.

However, it is not a cost advantage that determines everything, and sometimes refurbishment is the only solution to the long delivery time of large bearings. In addition, the pressure of increasingly scarce resources is also one of the important reasons for the renovation of large bearings. Now, the shortage of resources has become more and more strongly infiltrated into public awareness, and it has also had an increasingly important impact on corporate decision-making. Sustainable development is by no means a fashionable phenomenon, but a decision that will completely change the contemporary trade and production process.

In this case, the refurbishment of large bearings has a prominent significance. Every steel, plastic or brass piece involves the issue of sustainable development. If the user decides to refurbish the bearing instead of using a new bearing, then 90% of energy can be saved.

Failure Analysis Reveals Improvement Potential

In SKF's Industrial Service Center, bearing refurbishment is not just about repairing bearings, but optimising them. A bearing can be repaired many times. In order to reveal the improvement potential of the bearing to the customer, the Industrial Service Center implemented organized actions and documented the cause of the failure of the bearing. Based on the analysis and description of the relationship between fault causes and results and automatic diagnosis, SKF experts summarized a series of methods. Analysis of the causes of failures deals with issues relating to malfunctioning of equipment, damage, repairs, causes of damage, and preventive measures and maintenance strategies.
