Flexible pump speed of choice

Flexible pumps operate by drawing in and discharging fluid through three distinct stages (refer to the working principle diagram), ensuring that the fluid enters the pump chamber—either through the pump's self-priming capability or by the weight of the fluid itself. This is a fundamental requirement for the normal operation of the pump. Therefore, the selection of speed is essentially a matter of suction performance. In high-viscosity applications, if the speed is too high, it can lead to cavitation, causing noise, vibration, and potentially motor overload. It may also reduce the lifespan of the impeller and other components. As the viscosity of the medium increases, it is recommended to increase the pump size and reduce the speed accordingly. Our company’s flexible pumps are capable of handling media with viscosities up to 10,000 cps. In such cases, the medium can typically be drawn into the pump chamber by its own weight, eliminating the need for excessive speed. The relationship between viscosity and maximum allowable speed is outlined in the table below: | Medium Viscosity Range (centipoise) | Corresponding Maximum Speed (rev/min) | |------------------------------------|----------------------------------------| | 1000 or less | 1400 | | 1000–2500 | 960 | | 2500–5000 | 700 | | 5000–10000 | 600–200 | In addition to viscosity, several other factors influence the choice of speed. For abrasive media, reducing the speed can significantly extend the pump’s service life. When handling fragile or shear-sensitive materials, such as yogurt, it is advisable to keep the speed below 600 rpm to prevent damage. It is also important to note that the speed of a flexible pump affects its self-priming capability. To maintain a self-priming height of at least 3 meters, the pump should operate at a speed of 800 rpm or higher. Choosing the right speed not only ensures efficient operation but also helps protect the pump from unnecessary wear and tear, ultimately leading to better performance and longer equipment life.
