Global warming will bring serious challenges to China's food security

Zheng Guoguang, director of the National Meteorological Bureau, addressed the first China Ecological Well-being Forum in Hohhot, highlighting the growing threat that global warming poses to China's food security. He emphasized that as climate change intensifies, it could significantly impact agricultural productivity and the nation’s ability to feed its growing population. According to Zheng, by 2030, China's population is projected to reach 1.5 billion. This increase will require an additional 200 million people to be fed, meaning the country must produce an extra 100 million tons of food annually. However, he warned that climate-related factors, such as rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and shifting precipitation patterns, could reduce agricultural output. Taking these challenges into account, Zheng said that China would need to produce an additional 30 to 50 million tons of grain each year just to meet demand. To achieve this, an extra 10 million hectares of land would need to be brought under cultivation. Unfortunately, the available arable land in China is shrinking due to urbanization, desertification, and environmental degradation. Zheng cautioned that without effective measures to combat global warming, crop production could decline by 5% to 10% by 2030. This would make it even more difficult for the country to ensure food stability. He called for urgent action, including investment in sustainable agriculture, improved water management, and climate-resilient farming practices. The director stressed that protecting China’s food supply is not only a matter of economic importance but also a critical issue for national security and public well-being. He urged policymakers, scientists, and farmers to work together to build a more resilient agricultural system in the face of a changing climate.
