Global warming will bring serious challenges to China's food security

Zheng Guoguang, head of the National Meteorological Bureau, addressed the first China Ecological Well-being Forum in Hohhot, highlighting the growing threat that global warming poses to China's food security. He emphasized that climate change is not just an environmental issue but a critical challenge for the nation's agricultural sustainability and long-term development. According to Zheng, China's population is projected to reach 1.5 billion by 2030. This demographic shift means the country will need to produce an additional 100 million tons of food annually to meet the demands of the 200 million new people added to the population. However, he pointed out that this task becomes even more complex when considering the impact of climate change on agricultural output. He explained that due to the effects of global warming, such as shifting weather patterns, extreme weather events, and soil degradation, China may face a reduction in its agricultural productivity. To compensate, the country would need to increase grain production by an additional 30 to 50 million tons each year. This means that the total food demand could rise significantly beyond current projections. Zheng also noted that increasing farmland is essential to meet these rising needs. Currently, about 10 million hectares of additional arable land would be required to support the increased production. Unfortunately, China is facing a continuous decline in cultivated land due to urbanization, industrial expansion, and environmental degradation. In a strong warning, Zheng urged immediate and effective action to mitigate the impacts of climate change. He stated that without proper measures, crop production in China could drop by 5% to 10% by 2030, which would have serious consequences for national food security and economic stability. His remarks underscored the urgent need for sustainable agricultural practices, investment in climate-resilient technologies, and stronger policies to protect and expand arable land.
