F1 in Schools and Autodesk Partner to Deliver Design Software to Students Worldwide

LONDON, July 17, 2013 — In a significant move to inspire the next generation of engineers and designers, Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), one of the world’s leading software companies, has partnered with F1 in Schools to provide free access to its powerful 3D design tools for students and schools participating in the program. With over 20 million students across 40 countries, F1 in Schools challenges young minds to imagine, design, and build scale-model Formula One cars, fostering creativity and innovation in STEM education. Andrew Denford, founder and chairman of F1 in Schools, expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating, “Having Autodesk on board is a game-changer. This collaboration will help us break down barriers and bring more schools into the program, no matter where they are located. Together, we can make a real impact on how students engage with science, technology, engineering, and math.” Autodesk’s contribution includes offering free access to industry-standard design, visualization, and simulation tools that allow students to bring their ideas to life virtually before constructing their race cars from balsa wood. This initiative aligns with Autodesk’s mission to support education by providing early access to digital tools that empower students to explore and innovate. Chris Bradshaw, Chief Marketing Officer at Autodesk, said, “It’s incredible to see students as young as nine using advanced software like virtual wind tunnels to test their designs. This partnership isn’t just about tools—it’s about inspiring a lifelong passion for design and engineering.” The F1 in Schools program challenges teams of three to six students to create their own Formula One team, designing, building, and racing a 21cm-scale model car made from balsa wood and powered by compressed air. Teams also present their work in a ‘pit’ display, showcasing their creativity and technical skills during regional finals. The fastest cars race on a 20-meter track, completing the distance in under a second. Winners of the regional competitions advance to the National Championships, with the top teams competing in the global F1 in Schools World Finals in Austin, Texas. The winners of the World Finals not only take home the prestigious Bernie Ecclestone World Champions trophy but also gain valuable scholarships to City University London. The partnership was officially announced today at an event held at Savoy Place in London, home to the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
