It is divided into 17 bison groups and distributed in 12 states. In addition, there are an estimated more than 160,000 privately raised bisons. Yellowstone National Park, which spans the states of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, is the only land where bison has lived since prehistoric times. In the beginning, fewer than 50 bisons were protected here, and now the population has grown to about 4,900, which is the largest number of purebred bisons. The Wildlife Conservation Society of the United States began pushing for wild animals as a national beast four years ago. The image of this animal has been deeply rooted in people's minds. It has existed for 25 years on the back of a 5-cent coin; it has been used by the U.S. Department of the Interior on the seal since 1912. After becoming a national beast, its status has been compared with that of the U.S. National Bird Bald Eagle.
