Breakthrough in drilling technology innovation in Tarim Oilfield

This year, the drilling engineering technology initiatives in the Tarim Oilfield have been closely aligned with the company's strategic goals of addressing key challenges, solving practical issues, and enhancing the relevance, timeliness, and effectiveness of technological breakthroughs to support faster and more efficient drilling operations. Continuous innovation has led to significant advancements in multiple technologies, providing strong technical support for achieving high-quality and rapid drilling progress. So far this year, the total footage drilled has increased by nearly 10,000 meters compared to the same period last year. The average drilling cycle has decreased by 9 days, and overall well aging time has also reduced. These achievements are a direct result of several key technological innovations in drilling engineering. One of the most notable advancements is the maturation of vertical drilling technology. This technique has been widely applied in the upper sections of piedmont wells at Dangbei, Dina, and Yangbei, successfully overcoming previous challenges of high costs and low efficiency. It has provided an effective solution for avoiding casing damage and significantly improving the drilling speed in the upper sections of mountain front wells. This year, the average drilling cycle for mountain front wells dropped by 19.78 days, a reduction of 8.22%. The rig's daily drilling speed increased by 107.64 meters, or 21.32%. For example, the Dina 2-8 well reached 5,036 meters in just 117 days, saving 72 days compared to the planned timeline. It became the fastest well in the Dina block to reach 5,000 meters, and it was 35 days faster than the Dina 2-5 well in the Bidina block. Another major highlight of the year was the successful development and application of "light mud" technology. After initial success in the Yangta 1-7 well, the technology was further tested in the Yangta 3 well, where it delivered impressive results. The Yangta 3 well, a pre-exploration well in the Yangtaike area, was drilled using "light mud" technology from the start to the 4,009-meter section. The wellbore remained stable throughout the test, with no collapse observed. The entire section saved 43 days compared to the original schedule, setting a new record for the fastest mechanical drilling rate in the Yangtai block. This technology shows great potential for broader application in the future. The oilfield company also significantly increased its investment in engineering research this year, with over 50 million yuan allocated annually for drilling-related studies. In April, pressure-controlled drilling was successfully completed in three wells: Tazhong 722, Zhong 2, and Lunan 633. In July, in response to the extreme sensitivity of the third layer under the Dina 2 block and serious drilling fluid loss, a drilling-drilling technology test was conducted in the Dina 2-4 well, focusing on the narrow pressure window of the target formation. Initial positive results were achieved. In August, the Dabei 3 well underwent three deepening operations, including sidetracking in a complex multi-layer salt formation. The project successfully implemented ultra-deep well sidetracking, ultra-high-density high-temperature mud systems, and drilling under ultra-high-pressure conditions. All operations were completed successfully, demonstrating the oilfield’s growing capability in handling challenging drilling environments.
