72-hour trial run of the No. 21 generating unit of the Three Gorges Right Bank Power Station
On August 20, after a series of waterless tests, water-conserving trials, and a 72-hour operational run, Unit 21 of the Three Gorges Project's Right Bank Power Station was officially commissioned at 4:00 PM. This marked a significant milestone in the development of one of the world’s largest hydroelectric projects.
Unit 21 is the second unit installed by China Hydropower Fourth Bureau at the Three Gorges Right Bank Power Station and the third unit overall in that section. To date, 17 giant 700,000 kW hydroelectric generators have been activated across the entire Three Gorges Power Station, contributing significantly to the national energy grid.
On the day of commissioning, the inflow rate at the Three Gorges Dam reached 18,500 cubic meters per second, with the reservoir level at 144.88 meters. At this water level, the power station typically generates an average of 260 million kilowatt-hours per day, demonstrating its immense capacity and efficiency.
Unit 21 was constructed by Alstom of France, and installation by China Hydropower Fourth Bureau began on October 24, 2006. The entire installation and commissioning process took over 10 months, showcasing the complexity and precision required for such large-scale infrastructure.
During the commissioning phase, Unit 21 stood out among the 10 Alstom units installed at the Three Gorges Power Station. It demonstrated the most stable performance and the shortest commissioning time, earning high praise from the start-up acceptance committee. The committee confirmed that the technical specifications of the unit met all operational standards and approved its connection to the power grid.
In total, the Three Gorges Project plans to install 32 units of 700,000 kW hydro-generators. So far, 14 units have been commissioned on the left bank, while 12 are located on the right bank. As of August 20, three units on the right bank have been put into operation. Additionally, six underground power stations are still under construction, highlighting the ongoing expansion of this massive energy project.
The successful commissioning of Unit 21 not only strengthens the power supply capability of the region but also underscores the technological advancements and collaborative efforts between Chinese and international engineering teams.
