Antioch buys 2nd used ambulance

The Lake County News Sun recently published an article detailing the Antioch Fire Department's recent acquisition of a used ambulance from the Town of Paris. This move is seen as a strategic step toward reducing long-term costs and increasing operational independence. The purchase of a second-hand ambulance could help the village save significant funds, especially as officials evaluate whether to renew their contract with Superior Air-Ground Ambulance Services. The village previously ended its agreement with the Antioch Rescue Squad in May and now relies on Superior for emergency medical services under a contract that expires in November. Superior provides a full-service EMS operation, including two fully equipped ambulances staffed by two state-certified paramedics around the clock at the village’s fire stations. However, leasing these units costs the village $53,000 per ambulance annually. By purchasing a 2000 International ambulance with only 22,000 miles on the odometer for $20,000, the department can significantly cut costs over time. Fire Chief John Nixon praised the deal, calling it a smart investment. “This brings us closer to moving away from leasing and will save us a lot of money as we look to renew our EMS contract,” he said. The village already owns one used ambulance, donated by the state Foreign Fire Insurance Tax Board, and plans to have three in total—one for backup. Nixon also mentioned that another used ambulance may soon become available, allowing the department to plan ahead financially. “By the time we need to replace any equipment, we’ll have a better idea of our budget and be ready to make new purchases,” he added. In addition to the ambulance, the department received two donated Lifepak monitors/defibrillators from the local Antioch Firefighters Association, further enhancing their capabilities. A brand-new ambulance can cost up to $220,000, but the used one was purchased using capital funds designated for the fire department. Nixon believes this is a rare and valuable opportunity. “There’s a limited market for used equipment, and this purchase puts us in a strong position to eventually stop leasing.” His goal is to eliminate the lease for one ambulance in the next contract year and a second ambulance the following year. Before being put into service, the ambulance must pass inspection by the Illinois Department of Public Health. “We’re working to shift the contract from labor and equipment to just labor,” Nixon explained. “But we’re not ready yet to hire full-time firefighter-paramedics to take over completely from the outside contractor.” Currently, Superior responds to medical calls within the village, while the Antioch Rescue Squad serves the unincorporated areas of Antioch Township under a separate contract. The integration of fire and paramedic services is still under discussion, pending a potential consolidation between the village and the First Fire District. Thanks, Ron.

Double Cone Mixer

Double cone blender is most often used for the dry mixing of free flowing solids. The materials are fed into the mixing chamber via quick-open feed port manually or by vacuum conveyor. With the rotation of mixing chamber, materials is completely mixed with high degree of homogeneity. Normal mixing time is typically in the range of 10 minutes, however it can be less depending on the characters of material.
